My wife and I stopped at Islands Restaurant in Folsom on our way up to South Lake Tahoe. We just wanted something to hold us over so we split a Toucan Sandwich ($9.59) which was a chicken sandwich with terryaki sauce, swiss cheese and pineapple with a side of fries. The sandwich was honestly just OK. I didnt like the sauce all that much. The fries however were really good. The service was very good. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. If Im ever in the Folsom area and have some more time I wouldnt mind going back. It seemed like a pretty cool place to hang out and get a beer.

I went to see some friends who live just past Yuba City this past weekend and stayed the night. The next morning they took us to a place called the Black Bear in Gridley. When you first walk in you are greeted by a jukebox with .25 selections. After scaring the hostess a bit with our somewhat large group (7 people including 3 kids) they sat us in a big booth in the corner. Soon after the waitress came by to drop off our menus, which are little newspapers on the outside which you open to see the actual menu inside. I was in the mood for a scramble so I ordered the Joe Bear's Scramble ($8.95) which came with seasoned ground beef, fresh spinach, onions and sausage served over red diced potatoes and covered with cheese. It also had the option of coming with a biscuit or toast. I went with an english muffin, which I forgot to ask to be toasted dark but they still did it perfectly. Untoasted toast at restaurants is a huge pet peeve of mine. Anyway, it was huge. I ate maybe half of it and still had enough to take home and eat breakfast the next day that left me stuffed all over again. My wife ordered the pancakes 2 eggs and choice of meat ($7.99) (sausage, ham or bacon) of which she eats none of so I told her to get the ham and I would eat that. She liked the pancakes. Good sized. Typical pancakes. The ham was a nice sized piece and cooked well with nice grill marks. The kids each had the kids portion of the french toast ($4.95) which they both liked. The French Toast did look good. I should have tried a bite of theirs. As for our friends, their daugher ordered a volcano something or other that I didn't really check out too much as I was busy with mine. He ordered the Bigfoot Chicken-Fried Steak and Eggs (8.95) which was a huge piece of chicken-fried steak and looked really good. Not sure what she ordered. Apparently the Black Bear is a pretty good sized chain. I'd never heard of them before. Checking their website it looks like the closest one to me is in Walnut Creek, about a 15 min drive or so but definitely worth it.

Tahoe Joes in Folsom has the best baby back ribs Ive had possibly anywhere. They are fall off the bone tender, with really good sauce. Their sides are also great such as the beans, and the mountain mashers. Only downside with this place is be prepared to wait a while if you go on a weekend. If you're lucky enough to find a spot at their bar however, this is a cool place to pass some time until your table frees up.

El Pollo De Oro in Sacramento isnt much to look at from the outside, or the inside really for that matter. Who cares? I go there for the food, which is great. They have a seafood stew, which I would describe as sort of a Mexican Cioppino which is terrific. Its full of different kinds of seafood, in a mildly spicy broth which is delicious. Other favorites include their chimichangas and chiles colorado and verde. All are excellent and so is their salsa, chips are great too. Not a place you would go for the ambiance, but if you are looking for some really tasty, authentic Mexican food then you've got to try El Pollo De Oro.

Anthonys in Sacramento is probably the best Italian restaurant Ive been to in the Sacramento area. Its a Southern Italian (Sicilian) restaurant. Their chicken parmasean is awesome, a huge portion thats just delicious. Their ciopinno is also great, full of numerous types of seafood, with great flavor. Its owned by the same people who own El Pollo De Oro next door. It, like Oro is not the fanciest restaurant on earth, but this is why the prices are so cheap and the food more than makes up for the lack of ambiance.

Their home fries and hash browns are awesome, too. The staff is also always very attentive and very friendly. Although the place gets pretty busy, there never seems to be much of a wait which is also nice.

Ive been to Fins in midtown Sacramento once (One of 4 locations). Met some friends there for lunch and ordered a pint of Booneville Boont Amber, and a live Maine lobster($25.95). How can you go wrong with a Maine lobster? It was excellent. For my side I ordered the MAddies Patties, which were some type of mashed potatoe that I was a little dissapointed by. They had an extensive list of fresh seafood which I will have to get back to make my way through.

CF Chengs in Natomas, besides the cheesy name (Remind you of anything?) is a really good restaurant. Their prices are low, the food tasty, and the portions generous. One of my favorites is the mongolian chicken. Even though their evening combination menu is a bit confusing, they are more than willing to work with you to get the right items you want as part of a combo deal. For a fastish food type Chinese place CF Chengs is better than expected.

Review This Restaurant

Star of India in Fair Oaks for about 4 years was somewhere I would go at least once a week for lunch. The food was always excellent, with some of the best Indian flavors I've ever tasted as well as a nice selection. The owner is a very friendly guy, maybe a little too freindly sometimes (Sometimes I just wanted to eat and read my magazine without having a conversation the entire time eating). Unfortunately what stopped me from going back is that it sometimes is not the cleanest of places, and the owner doesn't seem to understand the idea of good customer service. I'd say about 75% of the times I went there I was the only one in the restaurant, as well as the people I would always bring with me. This was particularly true at least a year after 9/11. There was one day where I ate there, and got pretty sick afterwards. After a month or so I went back and mentioned it to him that I had gotten food poisoning from there the last time I ate. There was no apology. No offer of at the very least a discounted meal. He just assured me that I must have gotten sick from something else. Sorry dude, not the case. What finally got me for the last time other than that they kept raising their prices (I think the last time I went it was about $10.95 for the buffet) was when there was a piece of hair stuck to the inside of my glass. I called the owner over to ask for a new glass, and showed him the hair. He at first tried to convince me it wasn't hair, so I pushed it down with my fork. He then tried convincing me it was MY hair. Uh, it was a very dark black hair... you do the math. Well, after that I never returned. I guess to sum it up, the foods good, service isn't what I would call bad, but every time I went the place was dirty (dirty tablecloths all the time, etc) so eat at your own risk. That being said, of the literally at least a good 150 times Ive eaten there I did only get sick once....

With 4 locations in the Sacramento area there is bound to be a Jacks Urban Eats near you. Jacks is kindof like a modern style Hof Brau. You walk in, make your way down the line ordering your type of meats (Tri Tip, Roasted Turkey or Chicken) either in a sandwich or by itself as well as your sides. The Tri Tip and Turkey are both cooked very nicely. Never tried the chicken. As for their sides, both the garlic and Urban (blue cheese and spicy chili oil) fries are really good. So are the garlic and cheese mashed potatoes. I tried the Chinese Chicken Salad once and wasn't that impressed. Definitely had better. Jacks used to be one of my usual dining choices before I moved out of Sac and would reccomend giving it a try.

The Tower Cafe in Sacramento is my favorite Sacramento area restaurant. It is the one place I always make sure and take out of towners to when they visit. The restaurant itself is literally full of objects from all around the world. The atmosphere is fun, and there is also a large patio area enclosed in trees. Anything Ive ever had at Tower Cafe has been superb. For breakfast be sure and try the eggs tower (eggs benedict) which anyone who has tried them has said they are among they best they've ever had. Also for breakfast I would suggest the Italian and Mexican Scrambles, and the carnitas con huevos. The pancakes are also very good. For lunch/dinner all of their salads are huge, fresh and tasty. For the heartier appetite the Irish Gunness Beef Stew has always been one of my favorites. Ive also been told the Thai Green Curry is excellent. Their coffee is some of the best Ive had at a restaurant, which goes great with probably what has to be the best dessert counter Ive ever seen in my life. If you have a sweet tooth (Or even if not) this place is a must try.

Ive tried the Original Hot (Little kick), the Cajun (Bit more heat with large red chili peppers), and the Spicy BBQ (Really good). One of my peeves is when places charge for blue cheese or ranch, which they do. The decor is nothing special. Its your typical wing place with booths. But then again most people arent taking 1st dates to a wing place. That being said, if you are in the Natomas/Downtown area and are looking for some good wings Wingstop is the place for you.

Review This Restaurant

Back in the earlier days of Mikuni I was a big fan. Their sushi was always very fresh, and the pieces were very large. It seems as they grew in popularity they have gone downhill. A few months back my wife and I went to the downtown Sacramento location with some friends and ordered our usual tons of nigiri, and a few rolls. No longer are the pieces large, just sort of mediocre. I guess by serving smaller pieces they maximize their profits? Sorry, but Im not eating there to maximize their profits. Im there to have a tasty dining experience with big yummy pieces of sushi. Sushi isnt cheap, so it should be worth the price you are paying. I will say the quality for the most part was still there, the pieces were just small. If you are going to charge more than your competitors, then please make it worth it... I would have to say if you are in the Sacramento area and are more concerned with the quality of the sushi, than you are with the hip atmosphere, then go to Nishikis.

Granite Rock Grill in Rocklin was opened by Rich and Kay Gardner, the people who opened and ran Gold Miners Cafe in Folsom for years. Gold Miners was my favorite place to go for breakfast and really something I missed when I moved from Folsom out to Natomas. I was very happy when I found Granite Rock Grill, and found it to be the same exact quality of food, pretty much the same menu, and even had the firecracker station! (for those of you not in the know, the firecracker station is a couple of shelves on the wall full of all kinds of hot sauces). The portions are huge, pretty much anything on the menu is delicious, the staff is always very friendly and helpful, and did I mention the food? They've got some of the best, most creative omelettes, scrambles, and eggs benedict around. Both the home fries and the hash browns are also excellent. This new location is much larger than the Folsom location so getting a seat was never an issue either. If I were to point out one negative Ive had there, it would be the files.. hopefully they will have taken care of that by the time summer rolls back around. If you are ever in the Rocklin area, or even if you arent, its worth taking a drive to the Granite Rock Grill.

I am a big fan of bbq, and I have to admit I was actually excited when Logans Roadhouse opened up in the Promenade in Natomas. That excitement was short lived after eating there for the first and last time. I paid about $25 for a full slab of their "famous" baby back ribs and was extremely dissapointed. They were overcooked, dry and I had to keep piling on the bbq sauce which was a struggle to get from my waitress just to make them edible. For my sides I ordered the frys which were nothing special, and a cesar salad which was disgusting. The romaine and croutons were soggy, the dressing was bad, and halfway through eating it I crunched on what I can only hope was a peanut shell. I ordered my first beer which apparently I ordered during happy hour so it was a good price. I then sat there with an empty beer for at least 15 minutes (They werent even busy at all) after my food was gone and the waitress, who was also the BARTENDER brings me out my check without asking me if I wanted another beer. Well, I did so I ordered another whch she finally brought out, along with an updated check. Guess what, the second beer came in about 3 minutes after happy hour ended so the price for the second beer was about doubled. I also heard the people behind me complaining about their hot wings they ordered, and their meal. Their waiter didnt seem to care much, either. Lousy, overpriced food, topped with lousy service will make sure I never go back there again.

Vallejos in Sacramento is second to only Haciendas in Folsom for Mexican restaurants in the Sacramento area in my book. The food is very authentic and fresh, and the portions are huge. The carnitas are to die for. Other favorites would include the fajitas. The burritos are HUGE so bring your appetite. You definitely have to try this place for breakfast. They serve breakfast on the weekends until around 2 and they are huge, delicious and CHEAP. With a huge plate of Chorizo Con Huevos and fresh corn or flour tortillas for $6.25 you can't go wrong. I'll be honest in that I think their margaritas are a little overpriced, and under alcoholized, but taste good and they have a good selection. Staff is also always very friendly and attentive. They have three locations in the downtown area, but the 4th street one is the one I made my usual destination. Not to say the others are bad, just only went to one of the others once. Vallejos is definitely worth trying.

Pour a bunch of the malt vinegar over them both and you're set for one awesome meal. They also have a smaller size portion available for the weak hearted. They serve the traditional English Pub fare, bangers and mash, shepards pie, etc. Anything Ive had has been good, but the fish and chips is by far my favorite. Some people may be turned off by the fact that you have to do your ordering at the bar, but its worth it. They also have a realy good import beer selection on tap. Sakura Japanese buffet in Folsom was a nice surprise. I remember seeing it when I lived in Folsom, but never checked it out. One day for lunch I finally did, and boy was I glad. I'm not going to lie and say its the best sushi ever, because its not. But as far as buffet sushi goes, its some of the best I've had. The place tends to be very busy so they are constantly putting fresh sushi out. They have a pretty decent nigiri selection at lunch, and even more at dinner. They also have a really good assortment of both your standard and deluxe style rolls. If you have friends or family who arent into sushi, you can bring them along too as they also have a pretty decent Chinese food selection. At about $9.95 for lunch and I think $12.95 for dinner, this place is a steal.

Other favorites would include the fried ravioli appetizer, the calamari (so good), the Spicy Creole pasta, and the Fettuccine Arrostiti. With a name like BJs Brewery how can you go wrong? The burgers are really good, made with Angus Beef. The New Orleans Jambalaya with blackened chicken, shrimp and chicken-andouille sausage, sauteed with bell peppers, onions and tomatoes in a spicy sauce served over rice pilaf and topped with green onions is also really tasty. For starters the avacado egg rolls are good (I like Cheesecake Factorys better though), as are the chicken wings and chicken lettuce wraps (PF Changs, anyone?). As for the beers, I liked the Pale and the Red. As for the Stout, stay away from this one. It was all I could do to finish my pint, and I typically really like stouts. I dont know if I got a bad batch (This was down at the one in Irvine) but boy it was rough. Want the best sushi in Sacramento? Go to Nishiki in midtown at the corner of 16th and Q streets. The sushi is always extremely fresh, and the nigiri pieces are huge. For me, I'm all about the nigiri and Nishiki is probably the best I've ever had. The pieces are always so fresh, huge and full of flavor, just like sushi should be. Their Hamachi, Blue Fin Tuna and Smoked Salmon are nothing short of melt in your mouth mouth watering, as is the rest of their nigiri. If you're more of a roll person, those are good as well, and they have tons of them. My wifes favorite is the Beat LA roll which has tempura shrimp, yellow tail, tuna on the top with a spicy sauce. I have been eating sushi for about 16 years now, so I'd like to consider myself somewhat of an expert. Also be sure and try the oyster, or scallop shooters. These are also the best Ive had anywhere, and I guess they are kindof famous for them (I can see why).

Other favorites include the Chili Colorado, Chili Verde, and my absolute favorite dish here, the Arroz Con Polli which is a breast of chicken (Actually 2 breasts) on a bed of Mexican rice, covered with ranchera con queso sauce, served with sour cream and beans. SO GOOD! Their burritos are also huge and very good. Same goes for the margaritas. They also have some of the best salsa I've ever tasted, along with nice hot, freshly made chips. Grand Central Staion in Rancho Cordova has probably the most authentic Philly Steak sandwiches Ive had outside of Philly. Their other specialty sandwiches such as the Jersey Turnpike (Juicy, Thin-sliced steak and pastrami with mushrooms, garlic, onions, swiss cheese, spicy mustard and pickles) are also great. In addition to their sandwiches they've also got great buffalo wings. Nice and saucy, with 5 levels of heat as well as other flavors. Served with celery, carrots and ranch or blue cheese, they know how to do it right. Grand Central is a great place to get a good lunch, or grab a bucket of wings to go.
